The Dicaprio of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street. Where on earth do I begin. Last week I told my roommate, for safety reasons let’s call her Politician Penny, that I had just finished watching the Wolf of Wall Street. “Oh I heard it was really good, did you like it?” said Politician Penny “Imagine” I said to double P “Morgan Freeman smoking weed, then stripping down to his birthday suit, on top of a building, where he then dives in to a pool filled with orange jelly (why orange jelly? because its the best flavor, that’s why).” Does it sound strange and ludicrous beyond belief? Good, I feel as though you have the general basis of the movie now. Basically, this is what I kept on thinking of:                 And this is what I was getting: It’s ok if it says Image is Unavailable, I made it like that, because the scenes are much too rated R to actually show. Consider yourself saved. While I was watching The Wolf of Wall …

The British are Coming . . . and I’m OK with that.

A woman screams. Shrieking, at a wine glass breaking pitch, as she runs towards the huddled masses¬†down the street.¬†Her makeup running from all of the tears she’s shed in the last five minutes, her shoes are missing, because you can’t run for your life in heels. She finally makes it to the crowd. She collapses on the ground to take a breather, wanting to make sure she’s completely recovered before she tells her american friends the news. All of the women, and a couple of men, huddle around her. They wait silently, not wanting to rush her, but still waiting intently on the words to spill out of her mouth. She gets to her knees . . . raises her hands to the heavens . . . and screams: “THE BRITISH ARE COMING!” All of the girls continue to go buck wild, and as they say ‘fangirl’ very intensely. A couple of them faint, falling over the other girls, who find it not in there best interest to catch them at the moment. It’s more …

The Secret LIFE of Walter Mitty (and Ashley)

So I might be a little late, when it comes to posting reviews on movies. Mostly because I don’t really have time to watch them, and because I just started this blog. A month or so ago I watched the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Truly an amazing movie. As I watched it I felt like I was watching a movie about myself. Not that I work at LIFE or live in New York City, or look like a middle aged Ben Stiller. But I love photography and the stories behind them, a good photograph is like a good gourmet chocolate. They have that melt in your mouth sensation when you see them, poster sized, and on a wall. A good picture always has that amazing story that tags along behind it, but knowing the story isn’t the important part. A picture has an accompanying emotion, each one does. Growing up with professional photographers for grandparents I have come to appreciate the feeling that comes with taking that perfect picture. It’ s the feeling you …

Protest Frenzy

This week was a whirlwind of new adventures, I feel as if I am finally a true Wahingtonian, now that I’ve been to my first protests. How it started was oddly unexpected though. Many of the girls on my floor are latino or hispanic and they were all making posters in our lounge. I asked them what they were planning on doing, they told me they were going to a protest. Immediately I wanted to go, not initially interested in why, but simply to witness the process. They told me that I had to wear all black and that we would meet at the metro station. Sounded a bit shady but, hey, it was a protest after all. I had fun needless to say, and I fell in love with the cause. The protest was about Venezuela, and how the government is ignoring not only the basic and fundamental human rights but also its people. Several students who were protesting the government were a couple of days before we decided to protest. To show our …

My first week at my first DC job

My very first week at IPS (Institute for Policy Studies) was thrilling, I’m glad I work somewhere where my coworkers and bosses have a passion for making the world a better place, and where I can learn how to contribute as well. I work in the department for Development and Fundraising under Angelique Been, together we plan on expanding the company and helping it become more organized and well-known. My very first day on the job I got to sit in on a conference meeting where I got to listen to what the director felt we needed to be focusing on, and how we need to understand what the president is giving executive orders for. Afterwards I met the director of foreign policy and got an orientation of the floor from one of my coworkers. I also learned about the Split this Rock Festival, and I’ve become really passionate about it, at the festival there will be open mics , slam poetry and activism through panel discussions and more. I volunteered to help spread the …

Give them good grades . . . and maybe some cake afterwards

Sometimes studying will always be boring, some subjects will just never be interesting (sorry macroeconomics). If only you had that motivation that drives those try-hards in your math class, those lucky nerds, they don’t know how good they have it. Or maybe your not even studying, maybe your writing an essay (or a blogpost), and suddenly the clouds open up and lightning strikes you, giving you that all foreboded writers block. “Dear God Why?” you yell at the heavens. When it comes to studying I’m usually the first one volunteering to drive the struggle bus, I have the attention span of a goldfish, but only when I’m really not interested in the subject. However, I’ve found a solution, and it came to me like I believe most ideas come to people. I laid on the floor after an amazing dinner during final exams week, and played some music from a movie I had recently watched (if you must know, you nosy reader, the movie was Amelie), suddenly all of my questions were answered, as if …

Running out of Remakes ?

As I sat down for a singles movie marathon on Valentines Day (there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, by the way), we had previously agreed to watch three comedies ( This is the end, Don Jon, and some other movie which apparently wasn’t good, or else I would remember what it was called), two horror movies, and frozen. However we couldn’t agree on the horror movies we wanted to watch. In a bout of pure genius I yelled ” let’s watch a classic, how about the shining, or the poltergeist, Wait! I know, let’s watch Carrie” and everyone agreed with fervent head nods. So one of my neighbors started playing Carrie and as it came on I grew worried “Wait, what is this?,” my neighbor looked at me ” This is Carrie” as in ‘what’s wrong with you? this is what you asked for right?’. No, I did not mean the remade version of an 80’s classic, how dare you? so we decided to watch the Devil Inside and The Pact instead (both equally …

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia

No not this Chia: this chia : Chia seeds are a trending new way of being healthy, and I absolutely approve. I get up late sometimes (well really, almost every day), and I sadly can’t make eggs, bacon and oatmeal in the tiring 20 mibute dash that goes on at 8 in the morning. So I use chia seeds to take the place of breakfast, kind of like a protein shake. ” But really Ashley are you honestly expecting me to swallow seeds, I mean come on,” well you don’t necesarily eat them like that, though I do tend to sprinkle them on my oatmeal from time to time. Usually you would add chia seeds to a drink, or even yogurt (which is extremley delicious, I assure you), while letting the chia seeds sit for about 2 minutes you should stir them so they don’t get clumped together. What are Chia seeds supposed to do? When you drink chia seeds, as soon as they hit you r stomach they expand. No, your stomach will not …
